Assim, essas três unidades tornaram-se campus, formando uma só instituição e assumindo um novo compromisso: o desenvolvimento regional por meio da excelência na educação profissional e tecnológica. Possui campus também nas cidades de Passos, Poços de Caldas e Pouso Alegre, onde estão sendo investidos recursos na construção e reforma de prédios próprios, com infraestrutura e equipamentos capazes de atender a demanda de alunos. O objetivo é ampliar o acesso ao ensino profissionalizante nos 178 municípios de abrangência, beneficiando 3,5 milhões de pessoas, direta ou indiretamente. Articulando a tríade Ensino, Pesquisa e Extensão, o Instituto Federal do Sul de Minas trabalha em função das necessidades regionais, capacitando mão-de-obra, prestando serviços, desenvolvendo pesquisa aplicada que atenda as demandas da economia local e projetos que colaboram para a qualidade de vida da população.
