Attorney General's Chambers, Malaysia
Jabatan Peguam Negara, or the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC), serves as the legal backbone of the Malaysian Government. Under the leadership of the Attorney General of Malaysia, the AGC provides comprehensive legal advice, drafts legislation, prosecutes criminal matters and represents the Government in civil and public law litigation. Established as a formal institution in 1948 and operating under the Prime Minister’s Department since 1980, the AGC plays a critical role in safeguarding the rule of law and the public interest through fair, efficient and professional legal service. The AGC’s core functions include: • Advising the Federal and State Governments on legal matters, including Shariah law; • Drafting and vetting federal legislation and international instruments; • Prosecuting criminal cases through the Public Prosecutor; • Representing the Government in civil and constitutional proceedings; • Undertaking law revision, reprinting, and reform; • Upholding the Constitution and ensuring legal compliance across public administration. The AGC is headed by the Attorney General, the Government’s principal legal adviser under Article 145 of the Federal Constitution, and is supported by the Solicitor General who exercises prosecutorial and administrative duties across several key divisions.
